I heard the whispers of the townsfolk as I made my way through the market with my basket, filling it up with breads and corn for my grandmother. They were all gossiping about my red hood. They believed red to be the devil’s color. My little ignorant, superstitious town or settlement, should I say, that is nested on the outskirts of an ancient forest. Those who venture in too deep never return home. My grandmother lives in a cabin in the woods. Also, again taboo to live alone in the woods, but my grandmother is considered a witch by many just ...

For the most part, I used to love building puzzles, but now that it’s my job, I have lost the joy in doing them. I sit at my large white desk. The room is dark, almost black, with a bright light above me like the rest of the puzzle builders. They keep us separate from each other so that there are no distractions from building the puzzles. Some days I will build 5 a day depending on how many pieces there are and the difficulty.Staring at the box in front of me, I let out a sigh. The picture is of the scene from Pocahontas where she is standin...

I stood behind the Angel who had just summoned me at my crossroads. “What’s up, Feathers?” The Angel jumped with fright as I snickered. She recomposed herself. “What’s up, Soul Eater?” She chirped back. We chuckled, then hugged each other. We have been best friends for 3000 odd years. “Eden, you do know I have a cell phone and the reception in Hell is good.” I stated, pulling out of our hug and showing her my phone in my hand. “I know Loki.” “Then why do you insist on summoning me?” “I like to keep things old school.” She answered with a shr...

Once a upon a time I was the most powerful genie in the world and had just been set free, then came Al. He tricked me and trapped me in my bottle. Yes, legend says it’s a lamp, but it’s not my home. My prison is a bottle. The bottle itself is not pretty. From the outside, it looks like an old dirty rum bottle, but inside it’s glamorous, like the sultan’s palace. Lush red, gold cushions are everywhere, all different shapes and sizes, chiffons hanging over my lamps. I lined my walls with a rich purple Moroccan print. And a string of lights jus...

I’m sitting on the rocks, braiding pearls into my black hair. The waves are getting rougher, with storm clouds darkening the sky. Closing my eyes, I focus on the birds chirping, making their way back to their nests to take cover on the small island hidden by the treacherous rocks. I listen to the waves and marine life under the water. There’s a ship headed straight for the storm, which will push it onto our rocks. I’m not the only who has picked up on this. My sisters appear on the rocks, staring at the ship in the far distance. Some of them...

The good thing about being a janitor at a military base is that nobody pays any attention to you. You are just like a wallflower, but wall flowers have ears, especially when there are top secret meetings. So, when project butterfly effect is up for discussion, I linger longer than necessary in the back round of the office cleaning. I had heard whispers of the Butterfly Effect project. Supposedly, there was a device that allowed you to travel back in time. “I have approved the project Butterfly Effect. We are ready for human trials.” One of...
