It was all too much, really. The woman and the boy dragged their tired legs through the deep snow. Ahead of them, far off in the distance, lay the undulating, snow-covered hills where the log cabin they were heading for had been built, many years previously. The two could picture in their minds a blazing fire and hot chocolate with little marshmallows floating on the surface, and it was this that kept them going. The boy, a young teenager, often had to support the woman and help her across fallen trees that hampered their progress. The woma...

They say you become the person you will be before you turn 5. I guess for me, that is a good thing because life was pretty good for me in my first few years. I still can’t help but wonder how much my school years ended up molding me into the person I am today, though. Would I have turned out differently if I hadn’t been bullied? If the self-confidence I had as a young girl had been left intact, would I have made something of my life? Would I be happier? Would I be somewhere else entirely, or would I still have turned down the road I did? Wel...

The pain, like the violent rush of molten lava winding down a hillside, was almost too much to bear. He sat up in bed, pressing his clenched fist to his chest. The tips of his fingers, with their long and neglected nails, bit into the skin of his hand, the fist knotted so tightly not even a grain of sand could have escaped. A burning, oppressive poker relentlessly prodded his heart, penetrating deeper and deeper into the struggling chambers; the merciless onslaught made him gasp. He coughed, hoping it would chase the searing prongs from his ...

Closing my Manhattan apartment door behind me, I had no idea what I would be in for this beautiful September evening. I was ready to tackle my regular three mile run in Central Park. It was a routine I followed three evenings a week after work, and I’d found that I didn’t function very well if I skipped it. Tonight, however, I should have done just that. As I entered the not so well-lit area of the park that I always hated running through, I heard footsteps running away from me, into the trees. This made me very suspicious and a little bit a...

Like a skeleton with wispy hair, and skin like leather, she lies there, propped up against her old pillows with the worn and faded rose patterns on the pillowcases. The ancient mahogany queen-size bed looks enormous around her. There is a smell of rotting flesh in the room, mixed with the lavender she always insists on having on her nightstand. It’s making me nauseous, but I try to appear unfazed. She looks like she is hanging on by the thinnest of threads. However, her eyes are still clear and piercing. She is looking at us all, one at a ti...

I have 10 minutes left to live. I have known this for 30 seconds now, and it has seriously put a dampener on my evening. I had so many plans, not just for tonight, but also for the future. Now, however, I can forget pretty much all the things on my list because there simply isn't time for anything. Well, almost nothing, anyway. So, it all started about 21 minutes ago now. Damn, I guess this means I have 9 minutes left to live. But wait, please let me tell my story!? I'm not sure I can do it justice, though, in only 9 minutes. Then agai...
