Sweet-smelling steam warmed Miranda’s face as she leaned over the cauldron and breathed in. This was a recipe she knew well and practiced often, and hoped it’d please her mentor when she arrived. She stirred the mixture with her wooden spoon, and admired the colorful ingredients as they rose to the surface and plunged back under in the wake.
