Rodrick studied the butterflies as they danced in the wind, glowing red eyes able to track their movements with precision. Butterflies had always been one of his interests—a primary motivator that pushed him into his career as an entomologist. The field had seemed perfect for someone with such an introverted personality. He had been one of a graduating class of twenty-seven, back in his college days, and had since enjoyed the seclusion that his profession afforded him.Rodrick had never intended to play any significant part in history, happy ...

Removals of dead bodies tend to be swift—most deaths we are called for tend to take place in nursing homes, and most elderly patients tend to be lightweight and easy to remove. It is easy to detach oneself emotionally from cases such as these when the family isn’t present. It becomes like a medical procedure, transferring the body from the hospital bed onto the cot, propping their head up with a pillow, then zipping the red-clothed body bag closed. With house calls, the type of emotion in the room varies. Some families expect the demise o...
Story features heavy implications of past abuse. Oftentimes, good advice is easier said than done. You know that you should rinse your dishes after you’re done with them, but sometimes it’s far more convenient to leave them in the sink to “soak.” You’re more than aware that it’s already eight in the morning and that if you want to have a productive day, you really should get up, but those five more minutes of sleep are practically begging you to let your head fall back down into your soft, comfortable pillow. I don’t even know if he’s a man or not—can small blurry figures have a gender? Possibly. I don’t really know anything about him. When’s the first time I noticed him? Well, I guess I have to say a few months ago. It was such a small thing that I actually didn’t realize I saw him until I remembered later. It was past midnight, don’t ask me the exact time because there’s n...

I hesitate with the tenth tablespoon of butter, unsure whether I should add more or not. I have tried varying amounts of butter so far to no avail, and it is not as if my grandfather ever wrote the recipe down anywhere. After giving myself a few moments to think, I decide against adding more than ten. When I was a kid, my grandfather would use a fork to beat the butter in the bowl, then hand it to me to let me "finish up." The sound of the hand mixer's beaters clinking against the metal bowl sounds nothing like the muscled scrapes of my g...
