An old piano one side of the fireplace, an equally old stool made out of animal skin on the other side. Two rocking chairs strategically positioned close to the fire place. On one of the walls is a huge sculpture of a king. The house and it’s old furniture resembles a museum. An 80 year old man walks into the room and sits himself slowly into one of the chairs. The glowing fire makes the old man’s wrinkles more pronounced and shiny. “Why do you keep this piano grandpa? Look it has most of the keys missing. Are you going to use it one day?”...

A short plump old man walked me to a large metal door. He struggled to unlock the large golden lock, swung from one side to the other. Clinch, clinch, the lock finally unlocked. He opened the door and signaled me with his head to enter. “Are there any tour guides?” I asked “No tour guide. I’m told you have all the necessary information you need. Get in!” I slowly walked into the dark wall with dim lights. “Don’t come out this side, there is another door at the other end!” The door slowly closed behind me, making the hall even darker inside. ...

A thick blanket of dark clouds covered the sky, large droplets of water started to hit the ground forming small cups on the ground. I made a small prayer that the rain god stopped the rain a bit so I can get my ticket first. I followed the slow moving queue with large raindrops hitting my body, I didn't have an umbrella, when I left home it was hot and sunny, I never expected any rain. I finally got to the ticket office, the wait was like eternity. “Harambe, Freedom Train”, that’s all I said and the lady in the office tossed a pink ticket ...

A monster has visited earth, its being talked of all over the world. It is deadly, they say. The way they describe it would send one’s bowls running. The world is on a race running away from this unseen monster. I now hate watching TV because it’s all breaking news and everyone is talking about the monster. Walking in the street you feel like you are going to meet it walking to you. “Hello Jane,” the monster would say. At this moment I would run, run and run for dear life. Week in, week out we have been told about this monster but ...

Joe’s wedding ceremony was the first ever to take place in our family. I grew up in a large family in a village close to the border post. This area was basically regarded as suitable for wildlife but there we were, The Doma a, secluded clan. I was ten years old when my brother Joe wedded. The wedding has been a talk of the day for three months by the time we actually left the village for the wedding. I was too young to attend the wedding but Joe had instated that I should come for his wedding. I was a favorite young sister to Joe, he used to...

Odzi Country Lodge faces the beautiful Odzi River. Terry and Rose sit at the balcony of their room facing the open night. They quietly watch the beautiful moon shining on the river. A creepy sound of night creatures can be heard from their back ground; the two seem not bothered by the sounds anyway.Something draws the attention of the two and they turn to look at each other with questioning eyes. Two shadows pass by the building to their right. A loud noise comes from some buildings behind the lodge. It is a strange noise unfamiliar to the t...

“Jayden! Lenon! Hurry up you will be late for school” this voice would call us every morning when I and my younger brother were in the bathroom. We used to wake up at 5:am every school day and go to bath. Daily we would play games in the bathroom and forget we were supposed to be early for school. I was in Grade 4 and my young brother Lenon was in Grade one.“Okay mum, we are almost done” I would always answer from the bathroom. This was my daily answer even if she called before we started bathing. Sometimes I and my brother would play games ...

“You look good in that coat Henry,” complements Joseph his friend pouring hot water in his coffee cup. “Thanks for the complement. I got it for less than half of it’s actual value at the auction, it is as good as new. I have fallen in love with it myself” responds Henry making up the coat.It is a fine morning, the sun is already shinning high but the time is just 7:30am, the two are taking their usual breakfast, which is just bread and tea or coffee before leaving each for his work. Henry is a salesperson at the local car sales, while Joseph...

It was Christmas Eve of 1985 and an important day of my life, the day I was to prove to my in-laws that I was indeed the right daughter-in –law to join the family. Having arrived at the Mayo family a few days earlier I was still learning the customs of the family. My aunt had warned me to brace myself and prepare a dinner that was to steal the hearts of my in-laws to get their favor.I have been at the homestead four days now and everyday new family members were coming, they were almost fifty people on that day and some of them I had al...
