      The colorful rooftops of the downtown houses were best viewed from the alleyways behind them. I noticed that each one had its own distinguishing features: gables here; latticework there; fire escapes never before used and rusting against all regulations; fold-out chairs and portable grills too close to slanted decks, begging to prompt the use of the fire escapes; ivy running from the old hard ground all the way up to antennae, cockeyed against an overcast sky.
