Rosie waited for her father to take his lunch break. He marched to the front of the shop, locked the door and turned the sign to closed with a flick of his veiny wrist. Knocker stirred the pot with the concentration of a man seeking knowledge in the broth. He hummed softly as the ladle dipped, and the familiar smell of stale carrots made my stomach whine.
