It was some giant, cosmic joke. It had to be. Somewhere, up in the stratosphere, whatever deities were still watching over us mere mortals were cackling. It was, ironically enough, hilariously unfunny.  And, on top that, it was stupid, on my part, to let it go on as long as I had in the first place.
