Cara lied when the man asked the reason for her travels. With one hand, shaking and the other firmly holding on to her bag, she handed him her ticket. Belfast Liverpool! Belfast Liverpool! Why did he need to know? Why did anyone need to know? “I am visiting a sick relative. It's my sister. She fell from a ladder while dusting the ceiling. I've come to help out with the children. It's three boys, although Lenny is almost eleven now.” The trick was in the details. The officer frown and blew a puff of smoke in Cara's face. His breath reeked of ...

“You like doughnuts?” “Pardon?” “Donuts. Do you like doughnuts?” “Yes.” “What kind?” “Em...any.” “No, no, no, no, no. What kind? Chocolate? Sprinkles? No Sprinkles? Frosting? Pink Frosting? No Frosting? Cream? We both know the best ones are glazed but once in a while, we all need something a little different, don't we? So I'll ask one more time. What kind?” “Jam.” “Jelly?” “Yes.” “Alright. Now we're getting somewhere. Jelly heh? You like surprises don't you?” “If you say so.” “Nah there's no need for that. Yes or no?” “Yes.” “My doctor told ...

cw: suicide-related content A glass of fizz in one hand and a sad little shrimp in the other, I vowed to drive a red car this year. Even as I said those words, I surprised myself at how dull it was, perhaps even a bit greedy. A year ago, there was nothing I could have wished for that I didn't already know would happen. I had carefully planned my life and it was all going to happen, as I dreamt it. I could have wished for nothing more and so I wished for nothing. New Year's eve annual renewal philosophy is ridiculous. I, too, have often wishe...

10th of April:"So this, said Arthur to himself, is what you have become: a fool, a cheat, a murderer." He looked at the blood being washed from the streets. At the very same time, the Lady O finally declared herself disgraced. Who would marry a lady with such a tarnished past? She would remain alone for the rest of her life.A tortured king once said jewels were more dangerous than woman and worth a thousand more than gold. For once, the king may have been right. It took ten days, for poor old Arthur's world to crumble. Of one thing he was ce...

As an actor, we're told from our very first performance that the light projected onto the stage would protect us from the intrusive look of the audience and create a safe place, calming our nerves until the inevitable judgment. The reality is quite different and lights are rarely this strong. I personally like to peak at a face or two and spot a reaction. It's a tricky move that can easily either lead to a much-welcomed confidence boost or end up damaging my performance altogether. Then again there is always the risk a projector will break, ...

“I want a divorce, you obnoxious little twat” barked the lady in the red jumper while her frantic husband held on firmly to his fork. He would not use it, instead, he spat in his glass and threw the content in her face. Taking half her makeup with it, she dried her face with his scarf while he started to name all the things she would never put her hands on including some worthless sum and a poor introverted greyhound who, Lola was sure, could have done without such a rip-off. Lurking over unhappy couples was one of Lola's most precious pas...

The face in the mirror was not her own. It was harsher, her eyes were smaller and her skin was wrinkled. She saw what would become of her is she did nothing. Out at sea, she had dreamt for her to disappear, kneeling down on the church bench, she prayed for her to leave and vanish and late at night, in her dearest and most precious dreams, she had wished for her cousin to simply die. Willa was the daughter of a gifted apothecary and only heir to her mother's kingdom. She came from a long generation of silver-haired daughters who ruled the fog...

Drops of sweat started to run down my neck as the substitute teacher reiterated the question, “What mistakes have you made in your life?”. Absolutely nothing came, I couldn't think of a single thing. I felt slightly embarrassed and foolish. The other students looked at me with a sceptical look. I was sure some of them thought I was nothing but a pretentious liar and I was certain I had lost my invitation to half the class's birthday bashes. There was always the time I may have cheated on my math exam by lurking over Nerdy Nelly's exam paper, ...
