Ellen, a deaf-mute, realizes that her son is sleeping with the sheet up to half his head. She sees John lying face down with a reddish tinge. Despair sets in and Ellen takes the unconscious child on her lap. Ellen had agreed on an "emergency code" with her husband, she was going to call him and clap three times. That way, Carl would understand the warning and go home. The cry for help comes when she calls her husband, a night watchman.
