In the corner, by the fence, I planted a pumpkin seed…well actually a handful of seeds, but only one plant came up. I was so excited that I got some cucumber seeds and planted them by the fence, too. Within a week, there were six new plants growing by the fence. I was so excited that I got some sweet pea seeds and planted them by the fence, too. Soon they were growing and trying to hold onto the fence as they reached for the sun. I moved some rusty pails and buckets away from the fence to make more room for the cucumbers and pumpkin pla...

The phone rang in the story I’m reading, but then, it rings again, in my house. I get up from my chair in the sunny breakfast nook and walk toward the cabinet where the phone sits, and it rings once again. “No! It can't ring.” I think as my hand hesitates above the phone. I hesitate a bit more, almost afraid of this inanimate object, and again, it rings but the ring is followed by a click, and I think, “Yes, four rings and it'll go to the answering machine”….the answering machine I sold 6 months ago at a garage sale when I cut off the land l...

“Mom, look what the man gave me! Can I keep it?”“What man? What is it?”“That man in a long black dress gave it to me. He said it was an egg, a dragon’s egg! Can I keep it?”“Where’s the man? Where is he? Did he touch you?”“No, Mom, he didn’t touch me. He just gave it to me, and said it was a dragon’s egg, and I need to keep it warm until it hatches. Then the dragon will be mine forever.”“What are you talking about? Can you show me who gave it to you?”“He was right there, by the tree. But, he’s gone now. I don’t see him anywhere.”“I don’t see ...

“Yo, Shawn! Over here! What took you so long? I’ve been waiting at least twenty minutes”Shawn and I are going biking in the Community Forest. We’re meeting at the gate behind the baseball diamonds where best trail starts. It branches off at several locations before we get down to the creek. “My Mom! She wouldn’t let me leave until I packed a lunch, water, a jacket, and spare socks. Oh, and my first aid kit! Then she had to watch me oil the chain on my bike, and check the tire pressures. Finally, she let me go! I’m sorry man!”“...

I know I’m only twelve, but, I know this move won’t be any better than the last. Oh, things will start off pretty good. There’s a new boss to figure out, and new coworkers to analyze. He’ll be able to keep the drinking to the weekends; he might even quit…temporarily. But, it’ll start all over again. He’ll need a few drinks on Friday to unwind from the week. He’ll need a drink each night because the boss is being too hard on him. He’ll need a drink because his coworkers are all slackers and he’s doing all the work. It may take two or three mo...

“I’m gone for a walk, going to explore our property…following the power line up to the back property line, then through the woods to Johnson Road. I should be home 4:30pm at the latest… M”I have to leave a note otherwise he’ll get worried. After we moved here, I fell into a bit of a depression. I was raised on the wide, open prairies and the never-ending forests around here make me feel closed in, contained, trapped at times. If he wants to follow and catch up, he knows which way I went. I stop at the end of our property line to gaze down th...
