You had diagnosed yourself to have Mathamania. Why? Numbers made you go crazy. The moment you saw numbers they danced around you like ugly ghosts, or say honeybees out of the honeycomb, circling your head to bite. You remember, as a seven year old, how your Dad was very particular about his kids doing well in Maths and languages, and his reaction when he found out that it's not exactly so with you. Your teacher had sent a note to your parents to inform them to take notice that you are not learning the tables. That day when he came home, ...

Neetu stood in front of the kindergarten gate sobbing. Fear gripped her chest, and her sweaty palms forming fists clenched the tiffin basket handles as she held it in front of her. She tried to see every rickshaw driver's face to find if it was Vitthal, and finding strange faces instead of him made her cry more.Vitthal had got late once again today to pick her up from school. Neetu waited panic-stricken until all the kids left but...

It was a rainy day; and that had raised Mrs Patel's anxiety. After the scorching heat of the summer, it finally started raining in the month of July. Puddles formed on the road in front of Mrs Patel's apartment; and tree leaves glistened with their emerald green after being washed by the rain. A string of rain drops hanging from the telephone and electricity wires shone with an occasional ray of Sun. Birds fluttered their wings after bathing in the puddles; and the wheels of the racing cars and two wheelers splashed muddy water on the walker...

Piyu came running home with glee after hopping down the auto which dropped her home. Her father was sitting on the sofa in the living room and watching her coming back from school, called her. She went and stood in front of him; the school bag still on her shoulders. He put the newspaper he was reading, aside on the sofa, lifted her up and placed her on one of his thighs and asked,"How was school, Piyu?"Piyu said, "Very good, we played in the toy house. It has a yellow roof, and red walls."Her father asked, "Did you study anything?"Piyu star...

Opening my eyes in the morning, my body feels like a log. Neither do I enjoy getting up from my lying down position nor do I want to go on lying down. Being a log in the bed is not particularly pleasant. I bring myself up and scratch out of bed, my every muscle and joint creaking. These days, brushing my teeth is never a must, early in the morning. It has become an elective job. A bowl of mushy, semiliquid, yellow masala oats with preserved carrots and hard semi cooked peas is placed in front of me, I feel like throwing it in the bin. Why do...
