It was a bleak December day when I got the confirming call. It was Dolores, my grandmother’s hospice nurse, informing me that she had passed away in the night. I thanked her for calling me then hung up hastily, taking shuddering breaths. I had no more family. My grandfather had died 5 years prior, swept away by dementia, now my grandmother was gone.
