Incessant beeping fills the hospital room, sharp and loud and impossible to ignore. Groggily, she opens her eyes. â€śHank?” Sleep cracks her voice. Her head feels as if it’s trapped in jelly. Light from a sodium streetlamp filters through an ice-glazed window. Frost flowers have bloomed along the pane and glow like marigolds against the deep night sky.“Honey, what’s that noise?” She shifts and realizes she isn’t in a hospital chair. She’s in a bed. Every little boy we pass is him. It’s the reason I didn’t want to come. This trip was your idea and I couldn’t tell you why I hated it, so here we are. Seagulls squawk in the distance. I love that sound and you know it. My therapist says that seeing him still alive is part of the process. It’s difficult to accept. Thirty-something Dutchy (country, not joint!), reporting for duty. I've been writing semi-seriously for five years, mainly working on novels that I hope to traditionally publish someday. I rarely have enough time to finish a story before the Reedsy deadline--hence my sporadic participation--but I enjoy the challenge.
