In the dim light of pre-dawn, the air was chilly and wet. Tall evergreens rose into the brightening purple-gray sky while the mists swirled around the understory as if alive. Magdalene ran along the path, her long braid swinging, her footfalls quieted by moss and humus. There was no other sound besides her regular breathing and the call of an occasional bird.
