It’s a weird sensation, staring back at yourself. Well a form of yourself, anyway. You from a different time, different dimension, different space, whatever you decide to believe. A window to a universe too similar to our own. Uncannily so, some would say. Similar enough in daily schedule and in personality that you would never notice those subtle, tiny differences in actions that stare you blankly in the face. The slightly harder brushing of their teeth, inspecting their blackheads just a little more closely before they go out for the night...

TW: Miscarriage, Stillborn, child loss It was finally almost finished. A bit dated I’ll admit, the paisley duvet cover contrasting ever so slightly with that dusty pink, almost ballet slipper paint I picked out in haste. The double bed, worn oak peaking through the sheets, was a loan from my mother, reluctant at first but knowing how much my husband wanted, needed this room to be filled. It stood in the middle of the room with its back against the wall, too pristine, too unused with its smooth, plump bedding, fresh from a store. It was sur...

Hazy. Head hurts. I do not know this room. Grey. Plain. Simple. Cold to the touch. It is small, walls too bare, uninviting, loveless. Like a prison. Only two doors loom over me. They make my head hurt more. I get up. Slowly. I have made it as far as sitting. It was a struggle. Any attempt to get past this point is making me want to heave. I am cold, not dressed for this brisk temperature. The holes in my jeans and my short sleeves are overexposing my skin. I stand up, gingerly, using one of the sad walls for stability. I only just make it....

There is a lot of things I like in this world. Fat rain as it falls into puddles, creating bubbling pavement cauldrons that try to find their way towards the drain. The smell of rain as it hits the hot tarmac in the height of summer, that nothing else can seem to replicate. Yes, for some reason a lot of them are rain related. Reading inside with a cup of tea as the rain patters against the window, light fading as the darker, greyer clouds roll in, determined to bring in the storm. The way that rain, despite its inanimate, natural state, can ...

‘Who did this?’ April whispered far too loudly, waving a handkerchief soaked in God knows what wildly in front of her as I attempted to shush her through a smirk. In the two years we had both worked for this catering business, I don’t think we had worked an event like this. We had walked up the seemingly never-ending gravel path through the grounds with all our equipment, only to be completely swamped in the shadow of the mansion. The outside was impressive on its own, period windows covered the three stories of maintained brickwork, but my ...

The insect hum of the fluorescent lights was giving me a headache. Artificial light hit the books on the shelf, ricocheting into my eyes and making me squint. Why was this taking so long? It had to be here somewhere. I was starting to give up hope after trawling this campus library for what felt like an age, meticulously searching each section, no longer trusting the alphabetical order in case another, lazier biology student had decided on a different book at the last minute, throwing what I needed back into a random empty spot as they happi...
