(I was writing like Raymond Carver so there are no quotation marks.) There was this girl.  They’re sitting on the couch as he begins the story. The Clockwork BoyOnce upon a time there was a clockwork boy. He was nimble as you please, with clever little fingers made from old gears and scrap metal. He could manipulate a pencil with little difficulty.
