Moving westward Selma, I needed to find that wooden bridge again. The one I crossed over the creek feeding the Alabama River. Though a bit unsure, I felt it was the back way that would head me in the right direction toward Birmingham. Wetumpka, a little speck on the map just outside of Montgomery, was not particularly familiar to me. I recall passing the exits for Wetumpka on I 65 on numerous occasions, never taking. As the October full moon was flowing through the blinds in the bedroom, that unmistakable sound was happening again. As I began rising up out of the bottom layer of sleep, the clinking of the ice cubes in a high ball glass was vague at first, then louder – it was being deliberately shaken at me. Grew up in Birmingham, AL. Moved to Savannah, GA for 8 years, one of my most favorite places! I am back in Alabama temporarily. I love writing short stories, most of which are based on the idiosyncrasies of my Deep South family, friends and point of view. I love history and sometimes find myself weaving it into my stories.
