We heard the stories. Everyone has. And just like everyone else, we didn’t believe them. In fairness, can you blame us? The tales, spun by frightened hikers and nature geeks, were always three degrees beyond absurd. How could we have believed them? (Sensitive Content: ritualistic death, blood) The ceremony is about to begin, and I’m not the least bit afraid. Above me, the full moon provides its ever comforting glow. The click of the lock turning into place signals the end of the day. The wind blows warm, but not yet humid. The sun sets lazily beyond the clouds, a deep yet vibrant red fills the sky as it departs from the day. It’s a beautiful May evening.
