Let’s start with the scene of the crime. It’s Sunday afternoon and my parents have just returned from an outing. My sister Roxy greets them at the door. Sensitivity Warning : This story deals with the loss of a loved one. Fern climbs out of her warm bed and gazes out the window. Heavy snow falls from the early morning sky. The forecast is calling for two feet of snow and a blizzard warning is in effect. She’s glad it’s Christmas Eve and she can stay in for the day.    October 30, 1980 - The station wagon pulls up to our seasonal campsite around 6:00 p.m. Our trailer sits on a wooded lot overlooking a tranquil lake.
