After going through a lengthy, painful divorce, Sam had decided he needed a break. A break that would allow him to be away from anyone. He had taken a sabbatical from work, packed his case with a few clothes and essentials and drove to this remote cabin. Far away from society and from the problems of the real world. He had even left his mobile and his laptop. He wanted nothing from the outside. No news, no messages, no phone calls. He didn’t want to be tempted to scroll through social media and see how happy his friends still were, in spite ...

Ben was an antique bear who had worn the same quizzical expression for nearly a century. Since he was put together by his first master, whose first initial and surname were etched into the white necktie the bear wore around his neck. G. Thompson. Ben was first purchased by Mrs Rosa Platts, who was buying it as a gift for her sons first birthday. With the bear came a small card with a handwritten message inside. “Hi, I’m Ben, I look forward to being your friend.” Ben was a light brown colour with a black nose, soft fur, with kind black eyes...

1 When I grow up, I want to be famous. Proper famous too. Not like those B-listers who go on big brother. Famous for a little while then never heard of again. I’m not going to be one of those who are famous for something crazy too. Like that girl who said she fell asleep after asking for one star and the tattooist gave her like fifty odd. I’m going to be beloved. A national treasure. Or, at least, I’ll be talked about enough. I won’t even be able to go down the street without some form of disguise because people will just keep bothering me...

Content warning: violence The convicts “It’s the second season of Released! with even bigger and more exciting challenges than last year! We’ve got six new convicts from female prisons and six new convicts from the men’s prisons!” The dapper TV host directed the camera attention to 12 people in prison jumpsuits stood in a line. They had cuffs on their wrists and ankles and a metal contraption circling their neck. The host was a dapper man and spoke in loud, enthusiastic bursts and wore a huge grin, displaying unnaturally white pearls....

Love Lockdown I live alone in my solitary and uninspired flat. Plain, cream coloured walls with one single movie poster displayed above my bed. The only company I have is my small house plant that sits on my coffee table. Over the past few weeks, I have gotten into the habit of whispering to it as I water it and, even recently, just talking it when I get out of bed. It is nice to hear a real voice, even it is just my own. It has been painfully quiet in this room. I have taken for granted all the visitors that used to pester me. Even my ol...

I wake up. I am cold. Very cold. I appear to be lying on the floor, staring at a ceiling of a-a what? A warehouse? It looks industrial. There are those large rectangular lights and metal bars criss-crossing. My head hurts. Am I hungover? No, I can’t be hungover. I did not drink last night. Oh shit. Have I been kidnapped? I panic and sit up. I look around. I see shelves packed with cans of baked beans and chopped tomatoes. Further down is some cans of chickpeas, kidney beans, butter beans. I appear to be down the canned food aisle in the loca...

It had been sixty-five years since Arthur had last visited to Wardsend Cemetery. The cemetery had been situated in this spot, in Sheffield, near the River Don for over one hundred and sixty years. Arthur, standing at the entrance, could still hear the steady current of the river. Taking him back, all those years ago. He liked the sound of the river. It was a relaxing contrast to the eery silence of the cemetery. When he was very little, he used to be scared stiff and would clutch his mother’s hand and almost fully close his eyes. Not complet...

Rosaline Her body was found by her mother on her bed at 10:05am on the 2nd of March 2012. Her usual olive toned skin had been drained of all its texture, leaving a white the colour of freshly lain slow and equally as cold to the touch. She lay with her face buried in a pillow. Reluctant, even now, to make eye contact. On the floor, next to the bed, lay an empty bottle of vodka and a blood-stained knife. There was no note. There were two unanswered text messages on her phone. One from Rebecca, which read; “I’m sorry if I made you feel weird…p...
