A young man and a young woman sat in a bar and stared into their drinks. The lights were dim and seeing as it was late and a weekday most of the regulars had left already, leaving only the couple and a few down-and-outers to fill the silence of the night. The man was sipping a whiskey on the rocks with a quiet restraint, while the woman, seated next to him, was on her sixth twisted tea. A quiet song played in the background, melancholy and low. “A Man's Final Cigarette” by Kyle Strouse

On a temperate, late, sunny afternoon in early October, an old man sat on a bench in Ocean City and smoked his last cigarette. He was a thin, frail thing, with drawn out paper-dry skin attached to hollow cheekbones and covered with hair grey as faded papyrus. He wore a long, blue and white button-up shirt, sleeves rolled up to the elbows, and tan board shorts of a youthful fashion which, when rode up at just the right angle, revealed the long-ago faded remnants of a sailor’s tattoo resting just above the man’s knee.
