I worked hard to ace my grad school entrance exams and got a full teaching and research assistantship that covered most of my costs at an Ivy League college. The school was a pressure cooker where every word I spoke or wrote had to be justified, every idea had to be defended, and every minute’s worth of work had to be crammed into only 20 seconds to be sure to meet each deadline on time.
