  Jeb woke to the sound of barking. Outside his bedroom window, a partial moon hung in the black winter sky. Jeb looked at the clock: 12:23 am, 8℉, by far the coldest night of the year. His wife Kate had taken Buster, their aging yellow lab, out before coming to bed. Since Jeb had to wake early for work, he hadn’t waited up for them to get back.
