Every weekday morning Angela drops her husband at the train station and watches as the 7:10am train pulls away from the station. Within minutes the platform is empty and the train is headed westbound into the city. Angela clears her throat and promptly drives home to eat breakfast and change into her work attire. Somedays it is a dress, other days it is a skirt and blouse, always with heels. The minute Florence, their nanny, arrives Angela hands off Lily and returns to the train station to catch the off peak 9:10 train. Angela has her s...

Lucy sat alone staring out at Stanley’s bird feeders. She had been married to Stanley for what felt like many years, but in reality it had only been three. They dated for six months before Stanley proposed after a chicken dinner that Lucy had made. Lucy had always pictured a movie type proposal, the ring in her champagne glass at a fancy restaurant, or on top of the Empire State Building with a crowd of onlookers cheering when she said yes. Being home alone was also nice Lucy thought. She didn’t have to worry about getting dressed up or cryi...

She was referred to as the woman in 9B. She had a perfectly nice name, but no one in the building bothered to ask her what it was. The gossip started soon after she moved into The Alden at 2 East 75th Street. She lived alone in apartment 9B which was the first thing to raise eyebrows. “Why does someone who lives alone need a three bedroom apartment?” “How can she possibly afford it?” “The woman in 9B had a visitor today.” “9B had an unusually large delivery today.” The woman in apartment 9B was far too busy to notice the curiosi...

The birthday parties at our school range from normal fun to over the top ridiculous. With two daughters we have seen it all. Magic shows, gymnastics parties, paint your own pottery, iceskating in Central Park to trapeze school, a private tour of FAO Schwarz and a sleepover at The Plaza Hotel, for nine year olds! I have lived in NYC for 25 years and I have only walked past The Plaza. Not many people have birthday parties in their apartments because of space issues. We hosted a luau in our apartment for our then 13 year old’s birthday, but not...

Greg and I had moved exactly one year after our daughter Esme was born to the perfect little seaside town about an hour outside of the city. Our house was a three bedroom, three bath cape style, light gray with black shutters and a beautiful magnolia tree in the backyard. The house on Birchwood Drive had everything on our check-list; a safe neighborhood, good school district, a fenced in back yard for our golden retriever Sam, low taxes, a two car garage, central air conditioning and a fireplace. I had always wanted a working fireplace. We d...

Sweet Dreams by Kari Larsen My mother and I would visit my grandparents often. We lived an hour and a half away by car on good traffic days. I loved our visits. I remember the excitement I would feel as we made the left turn off of the main road onto Westmoreland Drive. My mother would pull over onto the grass so we could switch seats. She let me drive from that point to the house. We kept it our secret from my father. I would have to stretch my leg a little to reach the gas pedal when she first started letting me drive. We would pa...
