Rose sighed and put her phone face down on the table. She had been scrolling through her social media and had received a private message from an old school friend inviting her to a party. It was actually a school re-union but her friend was refusing point blank to call it that, perhaps because she knew that the words ‘school reunion’ were a sure-fire way to ensure that no-one would turn up. With a heavy heart Rose drained the last mouthful of hot chocolate and put her mug in the sink with the one plate, one knife and one fork she’d used to e...

He was awake but he kept his eyes closed against the warm sunshine. Tentatively he wiggled his toes against the smooth cotton sheet and breathed out a sigh. He relished these few precious pain-free seconds because he knew that as soon as he moved his legs he would be swallowed up in pain like a slow motion action movie tsunami. Unstoppable and devastating. With a resigned frown he positioned his hands so that he could push himself up into a sitting position. Eyes the colour of a tropical sea open slowly. Brilliant white bedding, like summer clouds gently encase long, swimmer’s legs. It’s time. You stand before the mirror but you already know what you’ll see. A body sculpted to perfection, you are a god amongst men. You smile at the thought. In the bathroom, as you clean your perfect t...

You could tell it was his corner because it was bowed where he’d sat in it day in and day out, getting fatter and heavier. His T-shirt barely covered his belly now and his chin nestled among folds of fat. “Yes,” I said, quietly. “I take it the boy’s going with you?” He didn’t bother looking at me, just carried on watching whatever was on TV. I barely breathed. I knew it was over....

There You Are Wow. Just look at it. I mean, really look at it. I love watching the stars and on nights like tonight the sky reminds me of a cathedral dome and the stars are so bright and twinkly I’d say they are more beautiful than the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel. And it’s warm tonight too. You know the best way of stargazing is to be flat on your back on the beach, right? Mind you, even that can be unpleasant when the dampness of the pebbles starts seeping into your clothes. And I’ve already got a bad back. Oh, my God....
