When I was 17, life was far from ideal. Home was not the safe haven it should have been, so I stayed just long enough to graduate high school. College, of course, was nowhere on the horizon. I loved writing poetry and short stories, using them as others might a journal. But regardless of how writing would have made a wonderful career, staying alive was about the best I could do.
