Patch looked out at the lake. His grandfather always said that the lake had a certain glimmer to it after the rain. Today wasn’t one of those days. Today was hot and humid and it hadn’t rained for nearly six weeks. “Sorry Gamp”, Patch said out loud. I know you love a good glimmer.” It was August 27th. “Gamp” would have been 89 today. Patch turned to walk into the small, three room cottage. “Fucking brain tumor” he murmured. His grandfather, “Gamp”, had died just before Thanksgiving during Patch’s freshman year in college. Aloise loved recess! Her favorites were the swings, the jungle gym and the big- leaf maple tree at the far end of the playground. She loved to trace its deeply ridged bark with her finger and read her favorite books under its majestic leaves doing their job by giving her a nice, cool spot to read. Aloise was in the third grade at the Bulls Bridge Center School. She had deep brown eyes and long wavy, white-blonde hair that hung down around her shoulders like a shiny princess cape. “All right, boys and girls, you can put your papers ...

The rain was coming down harder now than it had been for the past four and a half hours of the drive up to the cabin in Maine. “I think I need to pull over,” suggested Nora as she braked and carefully pulled the car to the side of the heavily wooded road. “How much longer til we get there?” asked Crosby from the back seat.“Well, if the rain would stop coming down in buckets…”Crosby and Dax abruptly interrupted with their Uncle Larry’s favorite story opener; “It was a dark and stormy night, …the rain came down in BUCKETS!” This, of cours...

Wells Place Apartments was an upscale residential complex populated mostly by young professionals and families. It was highly sought after with its indoor and outdoor pools, basketball and tennis, fitness center and small, 20 person theater. Its Georgian style architecture with tall sash windows was a draw for the well-educated and successful thirty-something crowd of West Hartford. Mr. Wilson was the exception. At 84 years young,...

"On your tables, each group has a large sheet of paper, writing paper, pens and markers, yes?" asked Marty, the team building and Adventure Ed. leader. The girls sort of half smiled at each other. "What are you making us do?" asked Julia,"Well, that's what I'm here to tell you. We're going to do something that will be easy for some and not so easy for some of you, and that may be where the team building comes in.""It's not going to embarrass us, will it?""I hope not. It's competitive too Julia, so you'll like it! So here's what you're doing....

"I don't know what winter is all about, exactly, but I have seen snow. I'll never forget that day in April when you began to bloom next to me in Adelaide's garden. I had fully bloomed, standing tall and firm, but naturally turning my bright yellow flower downwards so I could see you come up. And there you were, not yet fully blossomed but I could see the raspberry pink color of your flower just starting to make its way through your green coat. But today, you were collecting snowflakes, as was I. It only made you more splendid and courageous....
