This is excruciating. I can literally be doing anything else, but instead I’m stuck here. Waiting. Forever waiting, it seems like. The sound of clacking keys makes my heart soar but it’s the pauses in between that I dread. Especially when those pauses drag on for way too long. Make a decision already! Put your idea, however heinous, down on that ancient laptop so I can move on with my life. It figures that I get stuck with the fresh-faced amateur that's still trying to figure out how to write. This is how it feels to be forgotten. Left behind. Not needed. I remember when I first met you. Your eyes lit up upon seeing me. You picked me up, inspected me every which way. Did the same motions to my twin. Told us we were perfect, that we were what you always wanted. You took us home. Our home. The air was so icy Laylah could’ve sworn that icicles were sticking out of her skin like needles. The weatherman had reported a huge blizzard coming in by the weekend and people were hunkering down in their homes already. But her friend was flying out tonight and needed a ride to the airport so she soldiered through the quick walk from her car to the tall apartment building in the stinging cold. Being the only one of her friend group with a large car that could handle extreme weather often made her a taxi cab. Fortunately, her friends alwa...

There was not enough wine to get me through this. There would never be enough wine in the entire world to get me through this. I didn’t want to be here. There was a reason why I moved across the country. The negative remarks made about my life, my looks, my everything would be masked as “constructive criticism,” and as a journalism major, I should be used to constructive criticism. Except my professor never told me I’d end up an old, shriveled spinster who wasn’t even worthy of having a hoard of cats. Which, of course, was to...
