“Wooded Memory” by Jack Nierling

The sun warms my body as I listen to the shrill cries of the cicadas. Their songs are metallic, reminding me of a powerline that groans when high voltage courses through it. I am still not used to these alien sounds. I grew up listening to the harmonious chorus of crickets in the evenings, frogs and toads that bellowed their tunes in the sleepless nights. Years ago, I used to love writing for fun. When I started grad school, however, I began writing less for myself and more for academia, and the dullness made me fall out of love with writing. I'm here to try and get that love back, and I think having prompts will help me get back to that headspace I once was in. I'm mostly interested in fantasy and horror, but I generally enjoy all genres.
