An eerie calm held sway over the city. The water below Battersea Bridge flowed swiftly and silently, lapping gently against the banks. As Henry leaned over to peer into the cold, murky depths, his breath rattled out like an apparition between pursed lips. While Whitechapel feared the knife, torsos had begun to wash up along the river’s edge in its wake. The Ripper — some thought — was widening its reach. Henry hugged his arms to his chest and let out a weary sigh and turned his gaze to the other side of the bridge. His eyes lingered on a poi...

Florida felt feverish. The humid air stuck to Beth like oil as she pulled on her suit and scuba gear, entering the algae-skinned pond. Behind her, Lilli followed, wiping a sheen of sweat from her brow. “We picked a good day for it, huh?” she said, squinting up at a clear blue sky. Beth picked a bit of scum from her regulator and purged it with a sharp hiss. The television was blaringly loud. The news reporter was going on about four students who had been found dead about three hours outside of town. The parents were being interviewed, the teachers were being interviewed, the students were being interviewed. Ben turned the story down, taking note of the university being mentioned as being his and Rob’s. He put his elbows on the table, put his fingers together and rested his chin on top of them. Frowning, he said, “Are you serious?” “I am indeed.” Rob said, taking an unapologetic sip from hi...

“You’ve got the dice, yes?” Captain Morgan Breach straightened his hat, blowing the feather out of his face as he and his first mate stepped off the bridge and onto the dock, “It’s imperative that I get that map.” His first mate, a scrawny man by the name of William, shook his old waste coat. The dice in his left pocket rattled too, “Aye, Sir. There she is. But, Captain, why not leave our fate to the God’s, eh? I’ve seen you gamble.” Breach rolled his eyes, “If I believed in fate, I wouldn’t be playing with loaded dice. But I’m not...

Tom went missing under my roof. It was hot and humid and he was sweating when he walked through my doors. He looked tired and frustrated, marching around my halls, calling for people that weren’t there. Once he realised that, he picked up his phone and started calling those people, enquiring as to their whereabouts. He was throwing open my windows aggressively in the process. Although I admit relief for the fresh air, my window pains are old and stiff, like old bones. He hurt me. “Alright, Ben. I’ll see you in a bit. Are you sure you’re ok...
