I lay awake listening to the sounds of the orphanage. Thirty boys ages ten to seventeen are housed here in bunks. I, like many of the boys, have lived here my entire life. A few more hours and all that will change. Today is my eighteenth birthday, and I will have to leave. The prospect fills me with dread.
