The sticky smell of lemon rind and tart raspberries trapped in every corner of the town can only mean one thing: spring is coming. But while the promise of this season is typically composed of year old jean shorts and children frolicking in newly born fields of sweet grass, in Larson, Massachusetts, it only means that our dark gray skies turn into a slightly lighter dark gray, and those of us who once lived anywhere else in the world long for the refreshing sight of blooming daffodils and exploding pink ...

You look out the window and, not for the first time, think about how wrong the forecast had been. Not that you’re complaining; the more trash in the skies, the more excuses you have for going Out. A vibration at your wrist makes you tear your eyes away from the copper colored landscape. The green light blinks spastically as though mimicking your heart rate. Excitement rushes through you at the sight. Looking out over the sandy hills one last time, you let a wild grin grow across your face before pushing you...

Natalia Grimwood, an overly cheerful girl with terrible cooking skills, hasn’t peed in over eight hours. In fact, she hasn’t moved anything other than her fingers since this morning. (Get your head out of the gutter; she’s been typing.) She’s simply stumbled out of bed, made a poor excuse of scrambled eggs and hasn’t strayed for her computer since. Her breakfast, now long forgotten and emitting a smell that not even the poets could put into words, sits next to an empty carton of OJ that was full not five...

She had never feared fire.Maybe fear isn’t the right word. She wasn’t an idiot; she was still aware that the flames could burn her, hurt her. She was moderately careful as a result, though she didn’t flinch when the campfire blew towards her. Didn’t hesitate to run across the hot coals that night on the beach. Didn’t turn down the opportunity to feed more wood into the fire’s crackling mouth. Her parents thought her naïve, but she knew better than to listen. She once told me that a sense of calm washed over her when she watched the flames. The...

I never knew there were this many shades of green. From the light shade of grass that’s pressed against my feet to the dark emerald of the trees towering over my head, colors dance through every moment, every movement, every breath of life. A quiet creek bubbles at my toes, spitting at me as it jumps over the tiny mountains of pebbles. Great branches sweep down to caress the vines crawling up their trunks. Blue sky pierces through the cracks in the canopy of leaves, sending soft light down to illuminate the grou...

Are people naturally good or evil? ...Are people naturally good or evil? Well I guess the girls in my math class are naturally evil. I don't think they’ve ever said one kind thing in their life, when when they have it’s just for manipulation. But then again that guy from English has to be naturally good. Cruel words never seem to sink below his skin, so he'll turn around to the same person who just threw swords at his heart with a beaming smile. I’m not sure what I am yet. I would like to think I’m good, and my friends could probably back me...

March 24, 2020Dear Wes, I wonder if anyone will ever read these letters. I mean, I know the whole point of them is so I can vent like a diary without actually having a diary and that no one will ever see them. But in most of the books and movies that I’ve seen, secret letters tend to get out to the open. If they do, I hope it’s like an Anne Frank situation. Not that I’m comparing this virus to the holocaust, but like a similar reading/description senario. Does that make sense? Hopefully that sounded not wr...
