Greetings to you. I suspect you've not met anyone quite like me before. I'm a bit of a puzzle even to myself and to those people I work with and who rely on me. One man perhaps understands me. The one who made me. Some people call him the Magician but there's nothing really magic about him. He made me for his daughter. As a companion for her but also as someone to keep an eye on her. She's a feisty thing and often puts herself into dangerous situations. You think of it as some kind of fantasy, Frankenstein's monster, don’t you? But ...

"I really don't get it, Amanda. It all seems so drastic." Amanda. It always meant she was in trouble if Mum used her full name. "I've got to do it, Mum. There's no way I can stay here." "But all that work you've done on the cottage? And won't you miss this boy?" "Of course I will." Mandy stooped down to pat the head of the ageing Golden Labrador. "But you'll be alright with Mum and Harry, won't you Buddy?" The dog whined and wagged his tail slowly. Perhaps he'd recognised the suitcases. And the fact that she'd brought him over to Mum's...

Thomas Adler grinned as he watched the full-sized vehicle make its way along the track. It accelerated quickly and was soon going at a steady ninety kilometres per hour. No emissions whatsoever. It was getting its energy in three ways: directly from the sunlight, from the saved-up energy in its battery, charged from the movement of the wheels, and from wind power, all successfully stored in a second battery which was turned on and off by a gyroscope. The small model had performed successfully; he was gratified to see the full-sale one doing ...

Grilled Cheese and SatNavs "Well, I have been told I make the best cheese on toast in the world." "What, better than a croque-monsieur from Patisserie Valerie?" "Oh, much better. Especially since they don't exist anymore." Ginnie shrugged. "If you say so. Go on." She'd popped round to admire my new flat and have a bite to eat before we set off for a concert we were singing in with our choir. I'd decided to offer her my speciality. "Right then. Be prepared to be amazed." So I grated the cheese, mixed it with the soured cream, add...

For the Money of Love They were a pain the backside, the ATM machines at his local supermarket. They always had the sun shining on them and you couldn't see the screen. Glyn tapped in his credentials from memory. He hoped he'd got enough credits to cover the tokens he wanted to extract. They said today that every citizen should keep at least 200 universal credits in cash tokens because of predicted power failures. Oh, what the heck. He may as well take the full 200. He held his breath as he keyed in the amount. Thankfully there were no...

"Who buys post cards these days - let alone sends them?" Sandy took off her hat and started using it as a fan. It was approaching midday, it was August and over forty degrees. She longed to be sitting by the pool under a sunshade. Instead of which Malcolm had dragged her round the shops. "They're old school, the aunts," said Malcolm. "They expect a postcard." "I suppose these pictures are rather lovely." There was one of the little bay they'd found and adopted as their own. "You've taken some really nice photos yourself. Why don't you ju...

Dreyfus had got used to this. Three nights in a row he'd managed it, as well as twice last week. It was almost too easy. They really should take better care of this beautiful old building. You shouldn't let any old riff-raff into the place. He of course, Dreyfus III, was an educated and honourable man. Not like those other rough sleepers who only had themselves to blame for their misfortunes. He had just been unlucky. The others had made stupid choices. Oh yes, it was so easy. He came in about four o'clock in the afternoon...
