A Childhood Remembered I’m a senior citizen now but the memories of my childhood are still vivid. My earliest memory was when I was fifteen months old. My bedroom was on the second floor at the front of our row house in Philadelphia. The room was wallpapered in large blue, yellow and pink flowers and my crib was situated on the far right of the room. Three curved bay windows overlooked the street. My parents were amazed when I described the room in detail many years later when I was an adult. They verified that the r...
I live in the beautiful small mountain town of Estes Park, Colorado that borders Rocky Mountain National Park. The merchants depend on tourist dollars from spring through fall. The town has more elderly per capita than any other place in Colorado. This retirement community is also the segment of the population that is most vulnerable to the pandemic. No longer did the elderly residents welcome tourists from other states. The local newspaper printed an article in June about the negative reaction of one member of the communit...

For many years I worked in high-rise buildings in Philadelphia. For one job, this meant taking an elevator up to the 47th floor and then down at the end of the work day. Never once did the elevator malfunction during the seven years I followed this routine. The elevators were a dependable means of transport within the building and we had confidence in them. I really appreciated this convenience when this service came to an abrupt end the day after the terrorist attack on the Twin Towers in New York city. An announcement was made over the o...

The discovery of size 12 high heels in my husband’s closet after I had kicked him out was quite a shock. How could I have not known my husband of 25 years was a crossdresser? Shortly before this surprising discovery, our tumultuous marriage came to an end when I found out that my husband was cheating with the wife of one of his coworkers. To add to this upsetting discovery of women’s shoes that were not mine in my husband’s closet, was the startling revelation that he was a cross dresser. It had never dawned on me that my hus...
ALWAYS STAR STRUCKBy Geraldine Treacy(1,281 words)The youngest of my five children, Matthew, has Asperger’s Syndrome. He is high-functioning and completed his undergraduate degree in English at an Ivy League university and then earned a master’s degree. He has a high IQ of borderline genius but has suffered throughout his life with bouts of depression. I asked him one time if it bothers him to have Asperger’s Syndrome and I loved his answer “No, it makes me unique.” He is unique. Since he was a young child he has alw...

A Very Memorable Wedding Anniversary on the Orient Express Trainby Geraldine Treacy“Your husband sounds like a real keeper” I remarked to my co-worker friend. “How romantic of him to think of planning to celebrate your 25th anniversary on the Orient Express!” Wow! Trudy’s face lit up “Yes, I never imagined that he would come up with something so special and so romantic!” I was almost as excited as she was when we embarked on a shopping trip to get her outfitted with a glamourous wardrobe including cocktail hats, velvet fl...

THE ROPESby Geraldine Treacy “Have you lost your mind? Are you telling me you’re traveling across the country to meet a strange man you met over the internet who says he’s a realtor?” “Mom, trust me. I’ve got good vibes about him. We’ve been e-mailing for weeks.” The next day, with Mom’s words of warning relegated to my subconscious, I packed a bag and left my home in Pennsylvania for my fl...

A speech impediment made my childhood difficult. Stuttering was embarrassing and I was subjected to a lot of bullying. I tried to sit directly behind the student in front of me in hopes the teacher didn’t see me. I didn’t want to be called on. Even if I knew the answer to the question asked, I said “I don’t know” rather than give an answer that I would stutter to get out. One time I remember the teacher meeting with my mother and saying “Geraldine does quite well on written exams, but she would do much better if she ...
