I’ll preface this story with the fact that it is all true. I live in Spokane, Washington. Have a nice house, surrounded by large pine trees. One day, my wife and I were leaving our school to go pick up our daughter and the weather turned dark. The wind almost blew my car sideways as I drove home. It was as close to being in a hurricane/typhoon of which I haven’t seen outside of South-East Asia. As I struggled to control my car in the now darkness, rain and wind pummeling us, I managed to get my daughter home from her school. Immediately, I t...

It was a balmy night in the desert city of Doha, Qatar. The winds were hollowing the sand storm had come in and made the night sky glow orange under a full moon and the bright lights of the metropolis. He packed a bag for an overnight stay across town. There was just one stop to make; their favorite Thai food restaurant. Hot curries and delicious dumplings awaited him. He got his takeaway and headed to her apartment. It was going to be a magical evening of great food and a movie or two. He ascended the stairs to the 5th floor with anticipati...

I can safely assume that the vast majority of people who post on this site write using a computer. Typing out their ideas, diatribes, memories, or whatever they choose. Of course, you’re using a simple keystroke. It is efficient, fast, and forgiving because if you make a mistake it can readily be fixed with a backspace or delete key. It helps us get the information out of our heads and into the minds of others across the world in an instant. A lot of times people talk about the good old days where everything was simpler, more relaxed, and I ...

Mother Nature is one heck of a woman. A comforting caretaker, helping you through the day, but she also has a bit of a temper sometimes. She gives you life but can also easily take it away from you. She can be hot one minute, then cold the next. Hard to predict at times, but you always feel her omnipresence: either for good or bad. I bring this up as there have been several times where she has tried to put a stop to my life: through no fault of her own, of course. One hot summer, early August, to be exact, I was working as an environmental...

“I have some ice cream and I'm gonna eat it all. You don't have no ice cream. You didn't get none 'cause you are on the welfare. You can't afford it”. - Eddie Murphy. Yes, that was from Delirious (1983). And then the kid in the story drops it and gets rightfully chastised for bragging. Perhaps it didn’t melt in that mean kid’s hand, but I am sure it melted his heart and ego. Perhaps I am making a gratuitous use of a metaphor for this post, but as kids, we all had an experience with a popsicle in the hot summer (those of us who were fortunate...

Ah, the fire. The fire was the blasting cap to my marriage (I shall get to that a little bit later). I met her at a party in Doha, Qatar, and we became fast friends. We had texted each other, as we all do these days. A week later we met once at my apartment. I made her supper (I’m a great cook; writing a cookbook now) and we watched a movie on my LCD video projector. It’s like being in a small theatre all alone. I already owned it, but was trying to impress her. Our romance grew, and we started seeing more of each other. Talking every day,...

Perhaps this may come across as pretentious, but I always help people. Forgive me if that is the perceived connotation, but it is not my intent. I’m just going to tell some stories of some small things that could have helped others more than I knew. First off, a bit of backstory. I travel the world for a living. I’m a research scientist and educator. I have been everywhere and seen everything. I see how other cultures live and know, to our human detriment, we aren’t always equal. Thus, I help out when I can because I am more privileged tha...

I was living in Qatar, Doha to be precise. Being an educator in the richest country on the planet I was well payed. So basically all you do as an expat is work and then plan your next holiday. You actually plan your next trip whilst on you current trip. But I digress. I had a trip planned to go to Komodo Island to see the giant lizards. It was always a dream of mine. I boarded the plane in Doha, nothing is wrong, it is just going to be a quick stop in Dubai. Ya; no; Sand storm happens. It is supposed to be an hour flight but we get over the ...

There is a reason I tie my shoes. Of course, outside of Velcro and boat shoes, we all have to tie our shoes. I tie my shoes with a purpose. The fact is that our shoes are one thing that holds us up. They keep us stable. They keep us strong. I am well aware that many people judge us by what shoes we wear. We can be rocking some Yeezy’s, or Air Force 1s, or a square-toed polished black dress shoe. We get judged by our decisions. The Yeezy’s exhibit a modicum of wealth. AJ’s show some old school respect. The square toe just is you are too old s...

Life fades from black to a dim, cool, light. Her eyes strain to fight the rays of color and blurred images as we all do when roused from a deep sleep. Our eyes adjust; seeing our immediate surroundings, while our brains slowly comprehend what is going on. She looks up at the slowly rotating objects that hang before her field of view, moving ever so slightly above her head. These objects look familiar, she has seen them before, but her newly awakened mind is working to put the pieces together from her previous viewing. A few blinks to mo...
