Every palm tree was dressed in lights. Traffic zoomed by on either side of the median barrier. Crowds—families, couples, tourists—were all over the sidewalk. The open shops were packed. Cameras clicked and flashed at the decorations painting the downtown area.     I was leaving too much of my fate to this coat. Normally, I wouldn't be caught dead wearing anything hooded.
