‘What time is it?’ She asked, no one in particular, just looking down at her watch, shaking her head in disbelief, and glancing up at the clock on the wall to confirm.‘Are you kidding me, why is an hour working here taking three hours’ throwing her head down on the bar beside the register, she gave a moan. These over-night shifts at the bar and gaming room were an absolute killer. If only she had napped earlier today like she normally did before one of these over-night shifts, but no she had chosen to go shopping, have her nails done, have lu...

To the Grave‘It won’t be long now’ the nurse said, straightening the crisp white sheet.Poor Gran, she had been sick for as long as I could remember. I loved Gran, she could be a bit cranky and a bit tyrannical, but there was a loving, caring side to her which she reserved entirely for her grandkids.Grandad hovered by her bedside, pacing back and forth. It had caught my eye as I was making my afternoon coffee. Taking the letter and my coffee out on to the balcony in the afternoon sunshine, I sat and slowly and carefully tore the letter open. It was handwritten, in very neat, an older style but easy to read handwriting. It began. Dear Beverly,I ho...

Clack, clack, clack’ The noise from my favourite pink rollie suitcase echoed as I hurried through the Sydney tunnels heading towards the Country Link terminal. If only I bought a new suitcase after the last disastrous holiday. Now the wheel was clacking and the risk of it falling off was becoming a real possibility.I had some time before I needed to board the Indian Pacific and begin my journey to Perth.Getting rid of the noisy bag was my first step. My suitcase limped into the checkin department, finally loosing the battle and its wheel...

Black OddsThe blinding glare from the early morning sun made his already sleep deprived eyes burn, as he staggered from the all-night gambling tavern. His head was swimming from the many tequilas he had been pouring down his throat for more than twenty-four hours. His eyes were already trying to restore themselves from the many hours of flashing colours from the gaming machines. His ears were ringing from the ding, ding of free spins and features. He was drained emotionally from the continuous highs and lows ...
