My foot met the weathered curb as I pulled the loops of my custom mask back behind my ears. Its autumn pattern was the only color on my uniform, other than the grease stains on my chest and shoes. I tucked my keys deep into my pocket for fear of its long lanyard slowing me in the heat of tonight’s struggle.
