Dick was elated when he dropped off his daughter, little Nell at a birthday party, it had been a while since he felt comfortable leaving her someplace. Now he had a child-free Saturday afternoon filled with endless possibilities. Maybe some woodworking in the shed, maybe the latest John Grisham novel, but the thought of a cup of tea and a soccer game appealed to him the most. Dick unlocked both locks on the front door, then put the code in to turn off the alarm. As he w...

It is seven in the morning and I am ready for my daily neighborhood perimeter check. I live in a cul-de-sac with six buildings, each with four apartments and some have a small yard in front or back. It is my job to keep the neighborhood safe and I am all business when it comes to my job. My name, Sir Maximus Winston the First, is longer than I am, so most humans who know me call me, Max. My human, Sheila, tags along with me on my daily walks, once in the morning and again in the evening. The morning walk is quicker than the evening one becau...

Her nails are natural, long, and filed perfectly, by my mom, her daughter-in-law. My gramma looks shrunken and small in the large hospital bed, her eyes are closed, her breath is raspy, and her mind goes wandering. ...
Christmas was just a few days away, Miles and his sister Evelyn are sitting on the porch of their childhood home in Northern California, reminiscing about Christmas celebrations from their past. Evelyn smokes her third cigarette and scans the neighbors in the cul-de-sac, putting out decorations, and visiting others with gifts and food. “What do you bet Blair is making his famous apple chutney to go with the ham dinner?” asked Miles. “I can only choke down one bite every year. ...

Steven tapped on his phone to bring up the GPS. He was a driver for Door Dash and on occasion was known to get lost. GPS said he was going the right way but Steven wasn’t so sure, the road was dark and he just drove through what looked like an oversized wrought iron gate. The street curved to the left and the right and the left again, making Steven’s inner sense of direction dizzy. He pulled over and stopped the car when his phone said, “you have arrived at your destination.” Something felt wrong and Steven checked the GPS again. He did not...
