We sat at the dark varnished table, an ashtray, a bottle of scotch, two glasses and a thousand unsaid words between us. I picked at the leather lining on my seat. Reached for my glass and took a sip. Was bitterly disappointed when nothing but air reached my lips. I poured another. "Anything you wanna say about the whole subject?" Kaufmanns low growl made my stomach wrench. I didn't want to talk at all. Not about the weather, the traffic on the street or even to exchange pleasantries with the neighbor in the hall. And I especially didn't want...

"I'm sorry, where is this all coming from?!" I hated arguing. Hated arguing on the phone. Hated arguing in public. So arguing on the phone in public was worst case scenario for me. My blood was beginning to boil, and I didn't have a face to focus my anger on. We are still young. We pack our belongings into bin bags and boxes and suitcases, drive them up to Rosemount Avenue and try to mimic the scent of home. We place spider plants on every surface, and begin our collection of empty spirit bottles. We come crashing into the classroom a week late, trailing greasy hai...

I sat cross-legged on the battered pull out couch in our living room. Pillows and blankets lay strewn around me like bodies scattered in a battlefield, but I couldn't bring myself to expel the tiniest bit of energy to pick them up. The sound of traffic outside was dulled, and I could feel the afternoon sun filtering in through the window and trying to break in through my back, but it bought me no warmth. The house was quiet now. A delicate silence lay over everything like a thick smog that suffocated any sign of life it might find. I could he...

The boxes piled all the way to the ceiling in some parts of the cabin. What felt like hundreds upon thousands of boxes filled with documents and forms and various other scraps of information took up most of the space in the already cramped two room cabin. The snow had been falling solidly for the past two days, the power went out three days before that and still hadn't returned. It didn't matter though. There was plenty of work to be doing that would keep her occupied through the cold, dark days. The only time she left the cabin was to colle...
