Benicia is a small community east of San Francisco that sits on The Carquinez Strait. It is actually closer to Oakland but that doesn’t sound near as romantic. I grew up near the water watching the boats head through the straights towards the ocean. Even though we were on the water, fishing wasn’t an industry like other places closer to the ocean, but boating was, and I spent as much time by the marina as daylight, and my mother allowed. Daydreaming had become a full-time occupation-plotting my escape to find my father. ...

I was drifting in and out of a half-sleep. We were 3 hours into our flight and the drone of the engines acted like white noise in the dark cabin. I needed to stretch but didn’t want to disturb the others in my row. I lifted my arms above my head and stretched my legs under the seat to get blood flowing. I glanced to the right at my neighbor in the middle seat. He had his headphones on and was splayed in a contorted position-fast asleep. I’ll be fine for a while, so I stayed put. I decided to check our flight status on the screen in the seat ...

“Blah, blah, blah.” We always watch the news when we eat dinner and its always the same stuff. People with masks throw stuff at police and they shoot water back at them. There is always a shooting somewhere-I wonder when it will happen at my school? The loudspeaker is blaring out instructions every morning telling us where to hide and listen to your teacher. Sometimes at the end of the news its kinda funny-they tell a story that makes my parents and Nano smile, sometimes they cry.We eat dinner in front of the TV because it is the only chair ...

It started with a voicemail. “Eh, hi Mr. Hansen, this is Jamie from E-Z Storage. We have sold our building, so you need to remove your Airstream trailer by August 1st. Give me a call at your earliest opportunity. Have a nice day.” “Shit!” “Where am I going to find indoor storage that isn’t a fortune?” I exhaled out loud. We had purchased it for our 25th anniversary thirteen years ago. It had gone on four trips to Yellowstone-one of them by a friend that wanted to rent it for a week to take his family on vacation. Most ...

I have a lot of time to reflect these days. I will die any day now I’m sure; Hell, I’m 95 and thought I would be long gone by now. My youngest great-granddaughter just got her driver’s license and my children are retiring…why am I still here? Watching the 75thanniversary of D-Day on the news was bittersweet. The memories came flooding back. It was frightening and exhilarating, especially for a kid who had never ventured beyond Utah. My friends are all gone now so there is nobody to talk to about what we went ...

Lisa was planning a drive to a rural town on Saturday and asked if I’d like to come. She is a realtor and had met a potential new client while hosting an open house. This new client had been drawn to Lisa primarily because she was a woman, expressing her belief that a woman would do a far better job of selling her properties. After a nice chat, she agreed to look at the properties Saturday; the reason for the drive. I had nothing pressing and thought a drive to the mountains sounded like a nice break from the usual traffic battle I face ever...
