He awoke to the beaming sunlight shining into his eyes from between the victorian medallion drapes. The parted drapes allowed the bright sunny day on the world outside in. He squinched his eyes, throwing one hand over them using the other to grip at a blanket that covered him. His head started to throb. His mouth was dry and tasted as if he had been munching on dry cat litter. Glancing around, he saw his pants lying on the carpeted floor next to the large sofa he was occupying. An empty bottle of Pappy Van Winkle bourbon was located just ben...
“SHHHH! Hush, this is a library! A place for reading and concentration, not a social lounge gentleman,” the elderly woman with large black-rimmed glasses with a dangling silver chain reprimanded in a stern but hushed tone. “We’re sorry, miss, just got a little excited over our discussion on this book here,” said a rough-looking fellow wearing a leather jacket and fingerless black leather gloves, his hands on an open book splayed out on a table. The book was open, displaying a large illustration of a man garbed in robes holding up a large...

“It’s a fact MS1, it’s going to hit us, and the outcome is certain: Planetary extinction.” The image on the large screen scrambled then came back crisp. Major Deaton of Earth Solar System Command stared through the screen at a group of 20 men and women within the communications room of Mars Station 1. They all gasped. Silence filled the room, and everyone stood in shock. The Major continued, “So we estimate the impact in…out …months.” “Damnit! The approaching asteroid is already causing interference with communications,” Jessica’s voice boom...
April of 1988, Kelly had fallen into a mine shaft, fracturing both of her legs, and received a traumatic head injury. Her boyfriend Able was able to haul her out of the shaft and get her back to a hospital after a harrowing 30-minute drive on a rugged desert road. As she laid across the truck's bucket seat during the ride, she was going in and out of consciousness. Once Able got into town, he did not slow down. His erratic driving happened to catch the eye of a patrol unit as he blasted through a stop sign. The patrolman flipped on his siren...

“How did it become to be like this?” Able asked Sharese as they set at the park chess table. Able moved one of his pawns forward. “Well, you have simply made all the wrong moves” Sharese replied as she slid her bishop in position to put Able into check. Able grunted, “I wasn’t talking about the game, but I am talking about our society.” “Oh no, here we go. Getting ready for a rant there Able? Go on then brother, let’s hear it. I love when you get all political” Sharese answered running her fingers through her curly black hair. “And you turn ...
April 1st, 1989 began just like another early spring day for Mike Thorn. He woke up at 6:30 am to the sound of Billy Joel’s We Didn’t Start the Fire blaring from his radio-alarm. “Augh, not again!” Mike grumbled and threw his pillow at the noise. Then a thought came into his waking mind sending a thrill of happiness throughout his whole body. He threw off his covers, jumped up out of bed planting his bare feet onto the cool wood floor, and began dancing around singing, “We didn’t start the fire. It was always burning since the worlds been tu...

It was a crisp morning with a light fog that hugged the ground across the rolling grass fields of the park. Large oak trees and shrubs broke through the wisps of fog-like eerie figures hiding within translucent shrouds. A man dressed elegantly in a dark suit, tie, and a mid-length notched lapel black jacket. Dark leather gloves covered his hands to keep the bite of the brisk air. On his head, he wore a dark bowler hat and his face was a pale white. Fringes of dark black hair curled out from beneath the bowler. His nos...

It was early spring in the heart of the Kentucky countryside and the year was 1779. A stone structure had just been finished near the crossroads of two dirt wagon trails. The structure was two stories with the first floor being entirely built from limestone while the second story was a mixture of lighter sandstone and wood. The first floor contained a great hearth and a large open area with two long wooden tables with parallel benches that could seat up to five diners at each side. A few smaller tables were also scat...
