THE LIBRARY Larisse was a bit peeved. She hated greeting duty. She moved to this station because she was promised better wages, better living quarters, and more Fun. Yes, Fun was capitalized. But once a month she had to greet the ship with newcomers. Fun was what you made of it. This was not it. She knew the history of the city she worked and lived in but, like most younger people, she was not particularly impressed. Larisse did acknowledge that science has progressed so rapidly since the 20th century everything accomplished then seems rathe...

When Time Stands Still Greg was one of “those” people. You know – the kind that never got anywhere on time. He was a wonderful person once you got to know him. But as he was late to every party, there wasn't always a lot of time left to talk before the host was closing the door. His tardiness was well-known. How he ever kept a job often baffled everyone but he worked at the same job for over twenty years. Perhaps, if you're really good at what you do, when you show up to do it doesn't matter. Greg met and married a wonderful woman. Sh...

It's been a really strange year. There was one lock down notice after another. Seldom enough time in between them to get out. Of course, most of the places I would go were closed anyhow. Someone else did my grocery shopping. I live in a spacious room with bath at my son's home. It's big enough for me and my two cats. They were my daughter-in-law's grandmother's cats. She went to a retirement home and the cats came to me. Sort of exchanging one old lady for another not-quite-as-old. Their names are Louis and Harry. One thing I've always don...

Not many people can say that they met someone they came to love while having their car repaired. Well, I can. It was a minor issue but I was upset as the car was new. New as in less than two months in my garage. The service writer at the dealer was surprised I had arrived so early in the day. I was more than put out and wanted the matter taken care of before I went to work. It was so early that the service department wasn't actually open yet for business. But the mechanic who fixed the sort of problem I presented happened to be at work and...

Two Sleds, Two Geezers Gene and I have lived above Lake George for over fifty years. We have a nice piece of property that actually stretches to the lake. We bought the land shortly after we were married. There was no house then. We built that as we could afford it. We started with two rooms. Now we have two stories, four bedrooms, five baths, living room, dining room, den, kitchen and utility rooms. We raised three children in this house. And every spring and summer they would play in the lake. Every winter they skated on the lake. ...

Grandma's Sugar Cookie Pie My cousin is not a cook. Never has been and probably never will be. Last weekend she stopped by for a chat and I invited her to stay for dinner. That sounded rather marvelous to her, she said, as she hadn't planned anything for dinner. She's single, forty, and skinny as all get out. I'm not sure she eats three meals a day. An hour before dinner time, I went to the kitchen to begin preparing dinner. Charlene, that's my cousin, followed and sat on one of the breakfast stools to chat and watch. I decided that the ...
