There is a feeling of dread in the pit of my stomach as I pick up the keys to the hire car, and start the long drive up the highway. The drought ravaged landscape does nothing to improve my mood. Crows pick at the eyes of the kangaroo carcasses littering the side of the road. In many places, dead grey trees reach skeletal arms towards the implacable sky, as if they had been begging the pitiless sun for mercy in their final hours.
