I fled the house like an escaped convict trying to avoid recapture, terrified I’d be dragged back to jail. I threw my suitcase in the backseat of the car and got in behind the wheel. There was a cacophony of emotions swirling in my head that morning. I felt like a cork afloat in the sea being at once pulled back to and pushed away from my home.
