“A Life of Gogol” by Caroline Corfield

I can feel myself coming together. Atoms once spread over this hillside are now returning to the old shape. I'm the first. I use the name Gogol. I achieve consciousness as their spread reaches a five metre diameter. The others will come as the circle of our material contracts, building into the body I've used to live on this planet. The last will be Henry. He ended here on this windswept moor with a shotgun pellet through his brains. We own this land. His naked body lay, subsuming and spreading, to change into the tough bog grasses, untouche...

Author bio

Caroline Corfield was born in Glasgow, studied Physics to degree level at Paisley College of Technology and has worked onboard seismic survey vessels belonging to an oilfield services company but now lives on the edge of rural Northumberland. In secondary school she twice won the short essay prize with autobiographical work which was judged by William McIlvaney on behalf of former alumni Fulton Mackay. She continued to write during her studies and her career as a geophysicist, and is currently studying for an MA in Creative Writing online at Hull University.
