The screaming scratch at the window startled Reedem awake. A sound otherworldly. Half past 3 the high pitch sound contorted into a deep cleaving. Reedem’s eyes widened at the sight of his window turning into a portal where a nimble four-legged creature bounded through. The black feline’s eyes hypnotized him to push himself off the bed and stare. Shadowless, the cat jumped on his bed, tail swirling. Reedem blinked and glanced at his alarm clock, which now read 3:31. At least it wasn’t staying still, he thought, otherwise it’d be a dream. ...

Richard was a guy who had it all, after his life got better from the accident. It wasn’t always so nice having a wife, two kids, even if they didn’t get straight A’s. But dang it, he had plenty of time to think of what he wanted, and got most of it. He was ruthless in most pursuits from sheer work: 16-hour days, undermining colleagues when needed. Power plays by will. He got things done. But only after figuring it out after making decisions that snowballed into paralyzing regret that physically stopped him.      ...

It’d been three weeks after Alex killed him. That was out of revenge.            “What you did,” said Jaya as she walked beside him on the path, “was good. The king gave a long-standing order. With your skill, there was little competition.” The red hue on her cloak faded with each week, and was as faded as the blue dress he’d bought her. Her hand patted off dust.
