The day began with a bowl of cereal, because the apocalypse is no cause for an unhealthy breakfast. Of course, no one knew the world would be ending that day. The girl certainly didn’t, so she started the morning the way she always did. She walked down the creaky wooden steps into the kitchen, where her mother Cassandra already was. Cassandra was nursing a glass of scotch, as per usual, and sipped it by the window. A breeze swept past the glass. The girl ate her breakfast as quietly as always, but something about the crunching snapped Cassan...

First, two things. 1. I only realized after that the key was under the doormat. Could’ve saved me a lot of trouble. Also, a giant security risk 2. If you are looking for a love story, look elsewhere. It was a bright winter day when I made my way to the prince’s castle. The vines creeped around the sides and the grey bricks were crumbling. It was larger than all the houses on my street put together, and I shivered, pulling my black coat closer around me. My hat was skewed on my head as I trudged through the sn...

I thought it would be easy. I thought that I would never have to think about them again, that once they were out of my life they would be gone and I wouldn’t have to be thinking about them in the middle of the night. It’s not like they were bad people. The opposite, actually, they were my best friends. We shared laughs and food and heartbreak and homework answers. All through middle school, they would save a seat for me in the cafeteria and sat beside me. They talked to me, as friends do, and I opened myself up to them, an...

The train dropped him off in the forest. It was a long trip, but he doesn’t mind that much. Except everyone kept shoving him. He couldn’t see any of their faces, but it was annoying. It took some energy not to get off too early, but he controlled himself. The forest was too good to miss. It is peaceful and large, and goes on for miles and miles. It snowed yesterday and it’s snowing now, light fluffy snow coasting to the ground. The circle of trees are topped with frost and sunshine, though it’s getting darker now. His footsteps make tiny imp...

In this city, crime is simply a necessity. Not encouraged, of course, but in the poor side of Chicago, I’ve learned everything I need to know. I’ve been fighting to leave it every second, but I can’t deny that it doesn’t have its perks. It didn't hurt that the mall is packed to the brim with bustling crowds who have no idea that the best pickpocket in the city is in their midst. It’s simple, really. Large bucket hats are in style, and they’re way less conspicuous than baseball caps. Other than perfectly matching with my bl...
That’s the thing about this city: turning the corner is forever a mystery. You never know if you’ll find scavenging raccoons, off-the-clock clowns, or a dead body. Unfortunately, I’ve seen all three. The Manhattan School of Arts has never been my dream. Unfortunately, when your father runs the school, it’s kind of hard not to get in. My grades have always been good though, and the private school and personal tutor didn’t hurt. Neither did any of the hundred lectures given to me, “Preston, you need to start taking this seri...

It Wasn’t Me Samara Patel Technically I did kill him, despite what I said to the police earlier that day. I didn’t do it. I didn’t kill him. I’m innocent, I’m innocent, please… The words had swirled in my head, becoming my mantra for the day. It hadn’t fooled the police who took me away, but it should be enough to get me through the interrogation. It has to be. I can’t go to jail. Not ...
Only an hour ago, my brother and I watched the sun rise above the hills. We had scrambled out of bed and pulled on the heavy armor stolen from the military storage center. He told me to walk quieter. I told him to shut up before someone heard us. I climbed onto a steed, only realizing afterwards that it was Sugar. I despise Sugar. The clumsy creature was a gift from my parents, but I hate it nonetheless. It is a cowardly horse, and absolutely terrible in conflict. Of course, that would have been helpful to know before I charged into the war...
