By her window, Adrianne wove the last wefts of her tapestry. A tear escaped her eye while she tapped the final passage of weft into position. She wiped her face and stood up, cutting down the artwork that had taken a year to create. The pink, read, and green rose pattern draped over her arm as she ran her fingers along the pattern. She then tossed the object on a pile of fifteen others like it and began to weep. Collapsing in the chair by her window, Adrianne could hear the birds that daily kept her company and serenaded her with songs ...

“Happy Birthday, Simon!”The young boy did not wait another second before he tore off the wrapping paper on the large gift his mother had set before him. “Ooh, cool!” he exclaimed. “A telescope!”He soon forgot about the cake, the other presents, even his mother who had gifted him the object of his fascination. He opened the box and ran upstairs, carrying the telescope piece by piece to his room. He laid everything out on the floor and examined the pieces. Consulting the instructions periodically, Simon managed to assemble the instrument ...

I hovered over Nick until he opened his eyes. He smiled then laughed. “Morning,” he said softly in his deep handsome voice. “What is it?” “Happy Valentine’s day!” I said, giving him a kiss. He frowned. “I thought we talked about this, babe. We don’t celebrate V-day.” He moved me off of him and got out of bed, heading directly for the shower. I lingered for some time in the warm cloud of sheets, hoping he was joking, but I could hear him singing Sinatra in the shower. He really had nothing special planned. While ...
When I got home from school on a Tuesday, all the pictures and mirrors had been taken off of the walls. The furniture - hall tables, coffee tables, side tables, were all bare - dusty with the outline of the knickknacks that once stood on them. I ran straight upstairs to my bedroom - my sanctuary. Not even my personal space was considered sacred. My stuffed animals from my childhood were already stuffed un-lovingly in a black trash bag. My bed had been stripped bare down to the mattress. I opened the closet and found all my clothes were ...
Hushed whispers percolated throughout the store when a tallish man with blond hair entered the store. Every woman made a double take as he passed by; I myself included. His posture was perfectly erect and seemed to encourage the same of others when in his presence. His blond hair swept to one side how men used to do back in the ‘30s. His clean shaven jaw was tightly clenched seemingly to forbid any smile. When my eyes locked onto his blue-gray ones, he only offered a courteous nod. “Who is that?” I asked the cashier. The woman sigh...
Leif yawned, stretched, and got out of bed. He pulled on a pair of trousers and tossed a shirt over his head and yanked it down over his torso. He searched for a pair of socks, finding them wadded up in his boots. Fully dressed, he ran downstairs where he was greeted by his mother. “Good morning, sweetheart,” she said, embracing him at the foot of the stairs. She gave him a kiss and backed away as they heard his father call to him. “Leif,”called the man of the house once more. The young man straightened up and smoothed his hai...

The howling winds sieged the windows and doors of the wooden chalet, but none of the men inside paid the elements any mind. They gathered by the roaring flames of the stone hearth, tending to a wounded man stretched out on a cot. At frequent intervals, one of the members of the party would depart from the group to fetch one thing or another and bring it back to the group. Besides the men’s hushed whispers, the cavernous room held a solemn silence. Only the cracking of the fire kept conversation with howling wind as if saying, ‘not now.’At mi...
*An excerpt from my current WIP*Jordan parked her car on the drive leading up to the farmhouse. When she got out, she looked around. The grass was unkempt and of multiple colors with bald spots in multiple places. The walkway leading to the house was a jagged, tripping hazard. Jordan stepped cautiously around the gaping cracks to avoid ruining her designer stilettos. As she climbed the steps to the porch they creaked. She examined the floorboards; they probably had not been painted in her lifetime, and probably not the gray white columns tha...
Laura stood in front of the mirror and brushed out her dark curls until they looked wild. She applied a beauty mark to her left cheek, crowned her head with a turban, and applied her lipstick. For the next three hours she was Madame Elle. Every weekend it was a different location but the same gig; tell people what they wanted to hear, but in a dark room with decorations. Laura yawned. “Madame Elle,” a young woman called from outside her makeshift dressing room, “we’re ready for you.”Laura exited the room, holding her head high in t...

The gate for my connecting flight had changed and I only realized it now as the gate attendant announced that they were beginning the boarding process for a flight to Miami. That explained why everyone looked at my winter coat when they sat down around me. I gathered my luggage and massive parka, removing myself from the tangle of legs and suitcases, and stepped into the flow of pedestrians. I looked for the departures screen and matched my flight number to the new gate. I was at gate D5 but I needed B12. As I walked, I soon sensed t...
